Server status update - 09/08/25

So I had the system shut down for a week or so as I was unable to work on it.  As of Sunday, I put the server back on the bench.Phoenix Server

That's when the fight started...

At this time, I cannot get Phoenix to run stable again.  Perhaps it was not simply the watchdog device.  The watchdog card may actually have been operating properly and was only responding to real problems with some hardware component on the server.

I have not been able to get diagnostics software to run on the system for some reason.  Perhaps that's also an indicator of some other hardware problem.  At this time, it looks like I may have to try to test individual components on another system that I'll try to make available.  If the other components do end up testing properly then it may point to a motherboard problem.

Anyhow, I'm still working on the hardware.  Sorry I can't get any more firm answer about it at this time.

Phoenix - our serverAfter much tinkering, a hardware device was found to have failed.  The device, ironically, is supposed to check the system for problems and reboot the system in the event of a lockup or similar need.  In this case, it was rebooting the system at intervals of  about 10 minutes.

While that idea is rather entertaining, it likely caused a corruption in the OS files.  This corruption, in turn, prevented the system from booting up.

So to recap:
+ The drives appear to be fine
+ The OS is corrupt
+ The hardware otherwise appears to be fine, with the exception of the watchdog card and possibly the onboard NIC

The next few days will be used to attempt to recover the OS.  The data will also be backed up as possible.  If, by Monday, there is no fix for the OS, then a rebuild will begin.  No other hardware should need to be removed or replaced.

As most active eminders are aware, our server went kablooee about six months ago.  Unfortunately, we have not had a chance to get it working again.

We expect that will change very soon.

In the mean time, please continue to use the Lifeboat as necessary.

Electric Minds logoThe question on everyone's mind is, "What the heck is THAT!??"

The question, of course, pertains to this new placemark on the electricminds.org domain.  "Is it some sort of hack?"  "Is there some sort of community hijack going on?"

The answer to that (those) questions is...:

DON'T PANIC!

There is nothing nefarious going on.  Rather, movement is happening to get the community off the always reliable "CafeUtne" Lifeboat.
